Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) – Affordable Housing Research Initiative
The Centre of Excellence in Urban Planning & Design (CoEUPD), NIT Calicut, initiated a research programme under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) based on a Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) research call. The initiative focuses on addressing key challenges in affordable, sustainable, and inclusive housing through research and evidence-based planning.
Six research proposals were developed across three priority areas: sustainable building materials supply chains, prevention of unauthorised colonies, and culturally responsive affordable housing. The proposed studies explore topics including climate-resilient building materials, Scope 3 emissions, behavioural and economic drivers of unauthorised colonies, inclusive urban growth, participatory housing design, and socio-spatial housing audits.
With proposed project funding of up to Rs 5 lakh per project and a duration of up to six months, the initiative brings together faculty and researchers from NIT Calicut to develop practical insights and policy-oriented solutions for strengthening affordable housing in India.
