GIS for Master Plan Preparation - GISMP 2026

The GIS Basics for Master Plan Preparation (GISMP) 2026 was a five-day training program focused on equipping participants with essential geospatial skills for GIS-based Master Plan preparation and urban planning. The program covered Master Plan concepts, GIS, Remote Sensing, spatial data collection, land use and land cover mapping, infrastructure mapping, and utility and public facility planning through expert-led sessions and hands-on exercises.
Participants gained practical experience in GIS data creation, georeferencing, digitisation, field data collection, spatial analysis, and thematic map preparation, including a field-based infrastructure mapping exercise at Sargaalaya Kerala Arts and Crafts Village. The program also introduced participants to GIS-based decision support systems, Web GIS, urban dashboards, Master Plan map preparation, and GIS report documentation, providing an end-to-end understanding of how geospatial technologies support evidence-based planning and sustainable urban development.

Digital Twins for Urban Studies - DiTUS 2026

The Digital Twins for Urban Studies (DiTUS) 2026 was a six-day intensive training program organised by the Centre of Excellence in Urban Planning and Design (CoEUPD), NIT Calicut, focusing on digital documentation, geospatial technologies, and Digital Twin applications in urban studies.
The program introduced participants to GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry, 3D LiDAR scanning, and digital documentation workflows through expert-led sessions, live demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. Participants undertook multidisciplinary field documentation exercises in Mysuru, collecting data on built form, mobility, infrastructure, utilities, and heritage using drone surveys, DSLR photogrammetry, terrestrial and handheld LiDAR scanners, and mobile GIS tools.
The program further covered point cloud processing, 3D modelling, data registration, GIS integration, and multi-source spatial data integration, enabling participants to transform field data into meaningful digital representations of urban environments. The program concluded with sessions on geospatial technology procurement and digital heritage ethics and data management, along with the preparation and presentation of a comprehensive digital documentation report.
DiTUS 2026 provided participants with an end-to-end understanding of digital documentation—from field data acquisition and processing to the development of digital urban models supporting urban planning, infrastructure management, heritage conservation, and evidence-based decision-making.

Urban Renaissance Tech Program Phase II

The Urban Renaissance Tech Program (URTP) is a flagship capacity-building initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, designed as a credit-based certificate program to equip urban managers, government officials, planners, and other professionals with contemporary knowledge, technological skills, and practical approaches for addressing emerging urban challenges.
URTP Phase II was structured around two key components: a Foundation Course and Elective Courses. The Foundation Course was delivered online through a collaborative effort of the four Centres of Excellence in Urban Planning and Design established under the MoHUA initiative - NIT Calicut, IIT Kharagpur, CEPT University, and SPA Delhi. The three-day online Foundation Course, held from 15–17 May 2026, brought together experts from across the four institutions and covered critical themes related to urban governance, disaster management, climate resilience, and technology-enabled planning. The NIT Calicut gave sessions on Introduction to Disaster Management, Introduction to Climate Resilient Cities, and Geo-Spatial Techniques for Disaster Management, providing participants with a strong conceptual foundation for resilient and sustainable urban development.
The Elective Course component conducted by NITC was an intensive five-day, in-person format from 7–11 June 2026 at the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC), with the elective themes AI-Informed Disaster Management and Climate Resilience in Urban Planning. The program brought together urban managers and professionals for an interdisciplinary learning experience combining expert lectures, interactive discussions, hands-on learning, technology-oriented sessions, and collaborative exercises.
The program was inaugurated by Dr. Anil Kumar P.P., Chairman, Centre of Excellence in Urban Planning and Design (CoEUPD), NIT Calicut, with an emphasis on the importance of continuous capacity building and the integration of advanced technologies and data-driven approaches into urban management. The program featured sessions by leading academicians, practitioners, researchers, and technical experts, covering areas such as artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies, disaster risk management, climate resilience, urban planning, spatial analysis, and technology-enabled decision-making.
A key strength of the program was its emphasis on experiential and application-oriented learning. Participants engaged in practical exercises, interactive sessions, and a Capstone Project, enabling them to apply the concepts and tools gained during the program to real-world urban challenges. The program also incorporated field-based learning and site visits, providing participants with an opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with practical urban and environmental contexts.
Through its integrated approach to technology, planning, disaster management, and climate resilience, URTP Phase II at NIT Calicut provided urban professionals with a platform to strengthen their technical and institutional capacities and develop innovative, resilient, and sustainable solutions for the cities of the future.
